Top Ten Contact Dermatitis Allergens Identified In Mayo Clinic Study

Mayo Clinic study looked at the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin condition resulting in swelling, redness and itching due to direct contact with the irritant. The top 10 on the list are:

  • Nickel: The metal frequently used in jewelry and clasps or buttons
  • Gold:-Precious metal used for jewelry
  • Balsam of Peru:(myroxylon pere) a tree resin fragrance commonly used in perfumes and skin lotions.
  • Thimerosal a mercury compound used in topical antiseptics and in vaccines
  • Neomycin sulfate: a commonly used topical antibiotic. Occasionally found in cosmetics, deodorant, soap and pet food
  • Fragrance mix: a group of the eight commonly used fragrances used in foods, soaps, antiseptics, dental products, cosmetic products, insecticides and perfumes.
  • Formaldehyde: a preservative used in many products such as paints, some medications , cosmetics, fabric finishes, household cleaners and paper products.
  • Cobalt chloride: A metal found in hair dye, antiperspirant, medical products, metal plated objects such as snaps, buttons and in cobalt blue pigment
  • Bacitracin: a topical antibiotic
  • Quaternium 15: preservative added to self-tanners, sunscreen, shampoo, nail polish paints and waxes

Patch testing is useful for identifying common contact allergens. Patch testing is done by application of potential allergens on patients' backs covered with patches for two days and then observing inflammatory skin reaction from the allergen.
